Which aspects of sensitive situations justify the choice of one functionality over another?
Are you interested in designing conversational user interfaces (CUIs) for sensitive environments and involving vulnerable users in the development of CUIs? Join us at CUI 2023 in Eindhoven for our workshop: “Participatory Design for Whom? Designing Conversational User Interfaces for Sensitive Settings and Vulnerable Populations,” organized by Maarten Houben, Nena van As, Nitin Sawhney, David Unbehaun, a Minha Lee.
Conversational User Interfaces (CUIs) are increasingly being deployed in a wide range of sensitive environments to address the needs and concerns of vulnerable or marginalized users. Sensitive environments include, for example, CUIs that bridge the communication difficulties of people with dementia or help refugees cope with new cultural practices through a chatbot on a government website. Although researchers are increasingly designing CUIs for such sensitive environments, methods and participatory design methods to address the highly sensitive needs and problems of vulnerable user groups are still scarce in research. This workshop aims to explore how we can design CUIs for and in sensitive environments with vulnerable users in mind, through the participatory design process. We aim to establish a working definition of vulnerability, sensitive environments, and how practice-based design of CUIs can be inclusive for diverse users.
If you are interested in participating in this workshop, we ask you to submit a statement of interest no later than June 5, 2023. We also encourage participants to submit a position paper briefly describing their work with CUIs and how vulnerability plays a role in their research by June 5, 2023.
