Window to Nature

Window to Nature

A multisensory window to connect people with dementia in nursing homes with nature.

This multisensory window aims to connect people with dementia with nature. Through the combination of video, sound and scent, people with dementia are offered an immersive experience of nature.

The connection with natural elements such as plants, birds and trees is essential for us as humans. In essence, nature provides multisensory stimulation and can help maintain or improve well-being and reduce negative symptoms. However, it can be challenging for residents with dementia who have limited mobility or difficulty navigating the outdoor environment independently and safely.

Window to Nature is a multisensory window that aims to connect people with dementia with nature. Through the combination of video, sound and scent, people with dementia are offered an immersive experience of nature. When the window detects someone approaching it, ithe volume adjusts based on proximity. This interactive feature encourages users to open the window, exposing themselves to carefully curated essential oils corresponding to the displayed nature scene.

Beyond its sensory benefits, Window to Nature seeks to evoke emotional responses and spark meaningful conversations about nature. It serves as a gateway for ‘in the moment’ experiences, promoting a sense of connection to the natural world. The system offers a modular system that determines the natural scene and the associated scent depending on personal preference.
