The Homing Compass, or in Dutch “welthuis compass,” is a concept developed to provide navigation support to people with dementia. The compass is an easy-to-use navigation system with one simple functionality: it always points home.
When designing for people with dementia, it is important to keep technology simple. In this concept, simple means no interaction is required, resulting in a low learning curve. The physical arrow contributes to this usability by being clearly visible and not displayed on a screen. The design looks and feels like a compass, through the use of familiar materials such as wood and metal. This reminiscence of the use of a compass reflects its functionality on a subconscious level. The Homing compass was developed in co-creation with people living with dementia, family members and caregivers. Through various workshop sessions, people with dementia were involved to provide feedback and guide the design process towards this end result.
